TAJIKISTAN

OVERVIEW

Kyrgyzstan is a tiny Central Asian republic with a population of around 6 million people, but it is said that if you rolled all the mountains out flat, the country would be bigger than China. 97% of Kyrgyzstan is mountainous, so wherever you travel you are guaranteed to have spectacular snow capped peaks on your horizon.
The mountainous terrain in Kyrgyzstan isn’t well suited to large settlements, so historically most of the population was nomadic. There are still families who drive their flocks of sheep and goats to the high pastures in summer, living on lake shores in yurts. Kyrgyzstan’s community based tourism infrastructure is much better developed than in the neighbouring countries, so wherever possible Paramount Journey will arrange for you to stay in a homestay with a local family, learning firsthand about their way of life. Staying beside Issyk Kul or Song Kul — Kyrgyzstan’s most scenic lakes — you can horse ride, milk yaks, erect yurts, and try your hand at making a shyrdak, the traditional felt rug which decorated and insulates a nomad’s home.
Kyrgyzstan has a number of fascinating historic sites, including petroglyphs, the ruined tower of Burana, and the ancient city of Osh. But it is the living cultural heritage of the Kyrgyz people which really enthralls guests, in particular kok boru and other horse sports, wrestling, the recitation of epic poems, and traditional music. The Ferghana Valley is divided between Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, and as diplomatic relations are currently good, it is easy to move back and forth across the borders. We also recommend combining Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, as Almaty and Bishkek are only a few hours’ drive apart, and both countries are visa free for most nationalities
Kyrgyzstan is such a popular destination for Paramount Journey’s guests that we have included it in three of our tours. The Central Asian Circuit is a “best of” itinerary which incorporates the Silk Road treasures of Uzbekistan, the dramatic Pamir Highway in Tajikistan, and the lakes, mountains, and nomadic culture of Kyrgyzstan. Waking up at Song Kul, looking out at the horses grazing on the lake shore, is a sight you’ll never forget. ...
Mountains and Nomads focuses on the natural wonders of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. This is an active programme for those who love exploring the great outdoors under their own steam. There are plenty of opportunities for hiking and horse riding, and you can even mountain bike, too. Paramount Journey’s experienced guides were born and raised in these mountains, and know every valley and pass. Your safety and enjoyment are their top concerns.
Ferghana: A Central Asian Patchwork covers a culturally rich region of Central Asia which was divided between Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan in Soviet times. Paramount Journey’s programme here is focused on the arts and crafts, and includes splendid examples of regional architecture, craft workshops, and bazaars. You will also feast on the fresh seasonal produce which grows so abundantly in this fertile land.

  • Tajikistan’s cuisine is a reflection of its cultural diversity and history, with flavors deeply rooted in Persian, Central Asian, and Russian influences. Here’s a detailed look at the culinary treasures you can discover in Tajikistan:

Traditional Dishes: Tajik cuisine features an array of traditional dishes that capture the essence of the country. “Osh” or “Plov” is a beloved rice pilaf, richly flavored with meat, carrots, and a blend of spices. “Manti” are steamed dumplings filled with meat or pumpkin, while “Qurutob” is a unique dish made of crispy bread, yogurt, and greens, often enjoyed in a communal setting.

Street Food: Exploring the bustling markets of Tajikistan will introduce you to a world of street food wonders. “Samsa,” savory pastries filled with meat or vegetables, are a popular snack. “Shashlik,” succulent skewers of grilled meat, are a staple in local markets. For a quick and satisfying meal, try “Laghman,” a noodle dish richly flavored with vegetables and meat.

Beverages: Tea, or “Chai,” is a fundamental part of Tajik culture. You’ll often find green or black tea served in small glass cups, often sweetened with sugar and accompanied by local sweets or dried fruits. “Doogh” is a refreshing yogurt-based drink enjoyed during hot summers. For a taste of tradition, explore fermented beverages like “Kumis” and “Tan,” made from mare’s and camel’s milk, respectively.

Food Safety: Food safety standards are generally upheld in restaurants and established eateries. When sampling street food, it’s advisable to choose stalls with high turnover and a clean appearance to ensure food freshness.

Dietary Preferences: While Tajik cuisine is meat-oriented, there are vegetarian options available, particularly in urban areas. When dining, communicate your dietary preferences clearly to ensure you receive a suitable meal.

Savoring the diverse and flavorful offerings of Tajik cuisine is an integral part of your journey. From the aromatic “Osh” to the savory delights of “Samsa” and the comforting embrace of “Chai,” Tajikistan’s food and drinks provide a unique gateway into its culture and heritage. Whether you’re a culinary explorer or simply eager to try new tastes, Tajikistan’s gastronomic expedition promises to be a rewarding and memorable experience.
