Discovering the Oasis of the Pamirs: A Majestic Journey to the Jizev Valley
Jizev Valley: A Contrast of Beauty and Solitude
Located in the mysterious core of the Pamir Mountains, surrounded by imposing peaks, the Jizev Valley (also known as Jisev, Jizeu, Jizew, or Jizef) stands as a hidden retreat. This lush haven provides a vivid contrast to the stark, arid landscapes of the Bartang Valley. Venturing into Jizev is more than just a journey; it is an opportunity to explore an unspoiled sanctuary. Here, the pristine wilderness and the tranquil simplicity of local life converge in absolute harmony.
The path to Jizev presents an enticing challenge that beckons the spirit of adventure in every traveller. Ascending to just under 3,000 meters, this trek serves as the perfect introduction to the mighty Pamirs at an altitude that is ideal for those venturing into the mountains for the first time or for those who need to acclimatize before heading to higher elevations. Covering a round trip of approximately 15 km and navigating elevations from 2,065 meters to 2,490 meters, the journey to Jizev is remarkably accessible, yet it offers a taste of the thrilling expeditions lying deeper within the Pamir range.
A Glimpse through a Traveler’s Eyes
“Our adventure began with a step onto the suspension bridge spanning the Bartang River, setting the stage for the journey ahead. The trail to Jizev swiftly rose, offering awe-inspiring vistas of the river’s confluence and the mysteries that awaited along the southwest shore of the Jizevdarya. As the river veiled itself beneath the slopes, we were left to ponder the natural wonders that defined this extraordinary trek.
As we approached Jizev, the valley unfurled before us, a lush tapestry of vibrant green landscapes and tranquil turquoise lakes, cradled by the nurturing waters of the Jizevdarya River.
It was an experience beyond my wildest imagination to witness majestic wildlife from such an astonishingly close proximity. Perhaps it’s the harmonious coexistence fostered by the gentle disposition of the locals, or maybe it is the bold courage inherent to these creatures, but the sight of wild mountain goats and ibexes, gracefully perched on craggy outcrops overlooking the villages, was nothing short of breathtaking. This remarkable closeness to nature, where the untamed spirit of the mountains meets human settlement, offers a rare glimpse into a world where man and animal share the landscape in peaceful accord.
The village, split into Upper and Lower Jizev, is a mosaic of breathtaking views and heartfelt human hospitality. Here, the tradition of homestays flourishes, with nearly half of the village’s households (three or four households in Lower Jizev and five to six in Upper one in total) opening their doors to travellers, inviting them to share the beauty and hospitality of their home. The joyous company of local children and their warm welcome introduced us to the heart of Jizev’s community in an authentic and spontaneous way.
While the trek to Jizev can be conquered within a single day, the true essence of the valley is best absorbed through a longer stay. That is why we decided to stay there overnight. Spending a night in Jizev Village allowed us to disconnect from the hustle of modern life and immerse ourselves in the village’s tranquil pace. Our homestay provided an unparalleled opportunity to forge genuine connections with the local family, share their daily lives, and uncover the stories that animate the culture of Jizev. Akai Gulshan (in Tajik culture, ‘aka’ is a respectful term meaning ‘elder brother’ used to address seniors), the host in the Lower Jizev, was the highlight of our stay.
A man in his early forties, Gulshan exudes a modest charm and sociability that is as refreshing as the mountain air. As the patriarch of a family of six (four children and a wife), his life unfolds within the walls of a humble abode, comprised of several tiny, yet impeccably clean rooms, one of which he graciously shared with us.
During our conversations, a picture of Gulshan’s life began to take shape. His family tills a modest patch of land, spanning 3,000 square meters, a green oasis in an otherwise unforgiving landscape. Moreover, it is here in the shadow of the mountains that they cultivate the staples of survival: potatoes, carrots, onions, and alfalfa—the latter serving as sustenance for their cattle. Among these, it is the potato that thrives under Akai Gulshan’s careful hand, claiming a third of their land, with the remainder dedicated to carrots, onions and the vital hay.
Driven by curiosity and perhaps a touch of modern naivety, I asked Gulshan why he did not specialize further into his highest-yielding and most financially valuable crop, the potato. My instinct was that he would want to improve his house, buy new furniture, and possibly even own a car. Gulshan’s response was a gentle rebuke to my unspoken assumptions. He said: ‘I am satisfied with my current life. Wealth to me is in the peace found within the blessings from above. I have everything I need right now. This is my wealth.’ When I pressed him to tell me his greatest aspiration, he replied that it would be to maintain the bridge and path to the village., thereby expressing a truth often forgotten: that contentment comes not from the pursuit of personal wealth but from the well-being of the community.
Meeting Akai Gulshan, a sage living a life of simplicity amid the grandeur of the Bartang Valley, was a lesson in humility for me and an insight into the essence of happiness. His life, defined not by the pursuit of material wealth but by communal wellbeing, is an example for all who navigate the complexities of the modern world.
In Gulshan, we found a reminder that happiness is a state of being, achievable not through what we acquire but through what we give back to the world around us.”
